regory Christie is a three-time recipient of the Coretta Scott King Honor for illustration. Two of his books — Only Passing Through and Stars in the Darkness — were picked by The New York Times for its Best Illustrated Children's Books list. He has also illustrated numerous jazz album covers, and is a regular contributor to The New Yorker. He earned a B.F.A. in media arts from the School of Visual Arts.
I read this book to a class of boys that were limited readers and they fell in love with the story. They were hooked from the picture walk. Talk about being engaged and active participants. We used this book for a month's worth of reading activities and writing task and not one complaint. Excellent job all around. It got them interested in reading about other men of color. I LOVED it for what it enabled my students to do!!!
